Between Women is a new FRESH look into the lives of BLACK LESBIANS! These webisodes are The L Word dipped in chocolate! This new series is made by and for lesbians of color and it gives you a peak into the lives of urban black lesbians living and loving in Atlanta, GA. It deals with real issues such as domestic violence, cheating, break ups, gay marriage, co-parenting, and getting over your ex. PLEASE support the project as it is ongoing and trying to get on national television. There is a link to paypal on the site. Every little bit counts. We need to support projects that TELL OUR STORIES!
Awesome! But if this is really about Black lesbians, then why must it be the L Word dipped in chocolate? That’s actually offensive, since as a Black lesbian, I don’t need the L Word to validate my existence. And by saying that this show is that one dipped in chocolate, the assumption is that these Black lesbians are actually not Black at all, which disavows the experiences of Black lesbians, and Black lesbians in the south at that. I really wish people would stop assuming that any lesbian experience has to be compared to the L Word, which if you recall, was taken to task for its very limited, very white, very able-bodied, very middle class lesbian experience.
There is no need to apologize for a show about Black lesbian experiences, let us enjoy it for what it is and leave the L Word out of it. You’ve got an audience, market the show to us to based on the quality of the show itself, not it’s precarious relationship to another one.
